Ailing Marcus Browne sorry to bow out of Golden Gloves
Tuesday night’s (3/13/12) Daily News Golden Gloves semifinal card at Petrides High School was, unfortunately, more memorable for the fighter who wasn’t there than the ones who were.
Clifton resident Marcus Browne — the reigning U.S. Olympic Trials and USA Boxing National Championships light heavyweight champion — didn’t make the weight for his 178-pound open division bout and thus had to forfeit the title he’s won the last two years.
“I’m depressed,” said Browne late Tuesday night via telephone, after the nine-bout card had been completed in Sunnyside. “I was 1.6 pounds over, even though I’ve had a stomach virus since (Monday night). I initially wanted to fight, then in the middle of the day was too sick to. But as the time got closer and they called me, I went in.”
